Position Summary:
The Pediatric Respiratory Therapy Educator supports Respiratory Therapy staff to attain excellence in pediatric cardio-respiratory practice through development and implementation of educational programming. The learning needs of staff are assessed and clinical educational experiences and programs are planned to meet these needs. This is done through the provision of orientation, role modeling as well as formal and informal learning opportunities. The incumbent uses a broad knowledge of health care environment and the science of Respiratory Therapy and educational theory to develop, implement and evaluate programs and curricula.
The RT Educator provides family-centered care to children and youth; assesses the needs of children and provides diagnostic, therapeutic, educational and clinical support in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with cardio-respiratory compromise.
The RT Educator integrates evidence-based practice into educational programs and activities reflecting current issues and trends. The incumbent strives to provide evidence-based research and integrate research with practice and supports the academic health sciences centre by providing/sharing
knowledge with patients/families, members of the inter-professional team and the public.

Principal Accountabilities:
Clinical:
– Assesses cardio-respiratory status of patients including physical assessment, response to treatment, non-invasive monitoring, laboratory and radiologic data
– Assesses appropriateness of clinical and/or technical support and treatment as related to respiratory therapy
– Performs/teaches cardio-pulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
– May assist with the co-ordination of discharge planning activities as they relate to the cardio- respiratory needs of patients
– Anticipates and identifies crisis situations arising from specific clinical illness and/or illness management
– Participates in the development of the inter professional plan of care
– Initiates appropriate referrals to other members if the inter professional team
– Attends morning, afternoon and sit-down rounds to ensure seamless communication of patient care plans within the Respiratory Therapy group and inter professional team
– Provides direct patient care and acts as a resource for the delivery of care for staff, patients and families within the program
– Advocates for the child and family, provides specialized, comprehensive care, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention.
Education:
– Coordinates, develops and provides a comprehensive staff orientation program
– Assesses the learning needs of the Respiratory Therapy staff and plans clinical education experiences and programs to meet these needs, organizational priorities and healthcare trends
– Acts as a role model and mentor regarding expert cardio-respiratory practice for staff within the program
– Integrates new practice changes and/or legislative standards into professional practice and curriculum development
– Provides and/or coordinates in-services of new emerging technology and changes/advancements to respiratory clinical practice within the program.
– Works collaboratively with the Director of Respiratory Therapy and the Medical Director to plan, develop and provide continuing education programs
– Collaboratively works with other educators in other disciplines to provide and/or coordinate educational activities of the professional staff, including MD, RN, PT, OT and others.
– Works with other members of the inter professional team to identify opportunities for joint learning and knowledge transfer, and inter professional education; for example: educational rounds, case
presentation and discussions, journal club
– Participates in Hospital/Departmental and University/College education programs as required.
Administrative:
– Assists in the coordination and disbursement of educational funds
– Maintains a library of courses, conferences, textbooks and journals
– Responsible for writing and co-coordinating and leading the development and publication of
Respiratory Therapy Policies and Procedures.
– Works collaboratively with the Respiratory Therapy Director during recruitment initiatives, performance planning for the Respiratory Therapy staff to ensure common goals and initiatives are
met. May participate in the interview and hiring process.
– Is a member of the unit/program and/or departmental leadership team.
– Participates and/or leads committees as required.
Evaluate:
– Ensures the Respiratory Therapy Educational programs are responsive and supportive of the individualized requirements of the staff, inter professional team members, children and families.
– Evaluates standards of practice to ensure they remain current, and are evidence based
Consult:
– Consults and works directly with Program Medical Directors, Respiratory Therapy Director, Directors of Nursing and others to provide seamless clinical care and education for staff, patients and families throughout the continuum of care
– Provides expert consultation to staff, patients and families, community agencies local and national partners regarding Respiratory Therapy care and practice.
Research:
– Ensures care provided is evidenced-based through the integration of research into practice
– In collaboration with the Medical Director, staff physicians, Registered Nurses and inter professional colleagues, identifies Respiratory Therapy research opportunities by evaluating current practice and
experiences
– Participates in and/or develops and promotes research opportunities for staff Respiratory
Therapists.
– Evaluates new respiratory therapy techniques and technology to assess its effectiveness and/or potential improvements to patient care
– Disseminates research and clinical findings through publications, presentations, seminars, case studies, as examples.
Organizational Responsibilities:
– Provides support for Respiratory Therapy staff during organizational and professional change
– Provide leadership to Respiratory Therapy team on projects, initiatives and changes related to clinical practice, education and research
– Accountable for completing statistical information related to clinical practice, education and research.
– Participates in and may lead quality management activities
– Accountable to align activities and performance with strategic goals and objectives of the Hospital
– Adheres to Hospital standards, policies and procedures in all aspects of care provision
Physical Requirements
This position requires standing, sitting, walking, and talking for undetermined periods of time. The individual can reasonably be expected to bend, stoop, reach, turn, and carry certain amount of weight

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
Minimum Education:
B.Sc., RRT or equivalent
Diploma from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program,
Graduate or General Certificate from an Accredited College of Respiratory Therapists.
Preferred Education:
MSc preferred
Minimum Experience:
5 years experience in acute care, specialty, subspecialty or other related experience preferred.
Working knowledge of Performance Improvement Process and international standards.
Teaching and/or program development experience an asset
Preferred Experience:
Pediatric, neonatal or other related experience preferred
Computer Skills: Advanced
Required Certification or Licensure or Registration:
Valid Primary License from the country of origin if applicable AND should be eligible for license in the State of Qatar within the Supreme Council of Health.
Language Skills:
English Arabic preferred
